Martin McDonagh has launched his latest project, “Wild Horse Nine,” a black comedy action thriller co-produced by the UK, US, and Chile. The film recently premiered at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival on September 3, 2026, to positive early reception. It is scheduled for theatrical release in the UK and US on November 6, 2026.
“Wild Horse Nine” transports viewers to 1973 Chile, a volatile period preceding the US-supported coup against the democratically elected President Salvador Allende. At its core is John Malkovich as Chris, a veteran CIA officer haunted by his past. Chris grapples with profound guilt and regret over his involvement in numerous global interventions, including the 1973 Chilean coup, the 1954 Guatemalan coup, the 1961 assassination of Patrice Lumumba, and an implied role in the killing of John F. Kennedy. Malkovich is joined by Sam Rockwell, who plays Chris’s protégé, Lee, and Steve Buscemi as MJ, their CIA bureau chief stationed in Chile.
Director Martin McDonagh has articulated his intentions for the film, stating it aims to examine the ‘awful things’ the CIA has done globally, a history he believes is ‘not talked about enough.’ McDonagh also highlighted contemporary resonance, observing parallels between the film’s 1970s historical backdrop and current geopolitical events. He noted a shift in covert operations, suggesting that while they were once secret, they now seem ‘stupider’ due to a lack of concealment.
Critics have largely given the film positive reviews, particularly praising its dark humor, incisive dialogue, and the strong performances from Malkovich and Rockwell. Beyond the political intrigue, “Wild Horse Nine” explores deeper themes such as male friendship, mortality, and the challenging search for personal reconciliation. John Malkovich’s portrayal of Chris has been singled out, tipped as an Oscar contender and described by some as potentially his ‘crowning achievement.’
