The animated musical urban fantasy film “KPop Demon Hunters” made its debut on Netflix on June 20, 2025, quickly captivating audiences with its unique premise. Co-written and directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, and produced by Sony Pictures Animation for Netflix, the film introduces viewers to Huntrix, a K-pop girl group with a secret mission: hunting demons. Their narrative unfolds as they clash with a rival boy band, the Saja Boys, who are themselves secretly demons.
Its engaging story and vibrant animation quickly propelled “KPop Demon Hunters” to become Netflix’s most popular global title. Within three months of its release, the film garnered over 325 million views, accumulating 541.8 million viewing hours. Beyond its impressive viewership, the film’s soundtrack also achieved significant success, with the song “Golden” soaring to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and earning an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
The film’s impact has extended into merchandise, with a “Spot It!” card game released in August 2026, followed by a “Monopoly” edition on August 1, 2026. Mattel action figures are also slated for release on September 1, 2026. However, the film’s title has drawn the attention of the Christian metal band “Demon Hunter,” which has filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against Netflix. The band claims the film’s title is causing confusion and damaging their brand.
Given its impressive performance and popularity, it’s no surprise that “KPop Demon Hunters 2” has been officially confirmed. Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation are developing the sequel, with Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans returning to direct. While an initial 2029 release date was reported, Sony Pictures Animation executives have indicated that a 2029 release is now unlikely, suggesting the sequel may not arrive before 2030 or later. This extended timeline is attributed to the filmmakers’ ambition to achieve high technical and storytelling standards, comparable to the “Spider-Verse” franchise, as they extensively expand the film’s universe.
As of now, specific plot details and cast information for “KPop Demon Hunters 2” have not yet been announced.
