Jacob Gurevitsch: Mastering Melancholy on the Spanish Guitar

From his base in Copenhagen, Danish guitarist and composer Jacob Gurevitsch has carved out a distinctive niche in the world of contemporary music. He is celebrated for his unique approach to the Spanish guitar, characterized by simple, melancholic melodies that resonate with a global audience.

Gurevitsch’s sound is a rich tapestry woven from diverse cultural threads. His inspirations span the vibrant rhythms of Argentinian and Brazilian cultures, the evocative storytelling of old Italian cinema, and the deep, soulful moods of Spain. While often associated with the Spanish guitar, Gurevitsch emphasizes that his music is not flamenco, though he openly appreciates the prominent minor tones found within the genre.

His musical journey began with studies at the conservatory in Copenhagen, where he initially honed his skills on electric guitar, delving into jazz and pop. However, a significant turning point arrived in his late twenties or early thirties. Tasked with mastering the Spanish guitar for an upcoming tour in South America, Gurevitsch dedicated himself to two hours of daily practice on nylon strings. This intensive period sparked what he describes as a ‘love at first sight’ for the Spanish guitar’s distinctive sound, setting him on his current artistic path.

Over the years, Gurevitsch has built an impressive discography. His albums include ‘Lovers in Paris’ (2015), ‘Cinemática’ (2017), and ‘In Search of Lost Time’ (2019). The 2022 release, ‘Yellow Spaceship’, holds particular significance as a tribute to a deceased friend, exploring profound themes of love, sorrow, and hope. Fans can also look forward to his latest album, ‘Dream Catcher’, set for release in 2026.

Beyond his solo work, Gurevitsch has engaged in compelling collaborations, including the track ‘Kara Toprak’ with Turkish music producer Islandman and the soulful ‘Melancolía’ featuring flamenco singer Buika. These partnerships further illustrate his broad musical interests and ability to connect across genres.

Gurevitsch’s evocative melodies have resonated widely, establishing a substantial global following. His music boasts over 150 million streams on digital platforms and maintains approximately 2 million monthly streams, cementing his status as a truly international artist.
