Israeli Artist Forges Rockets into Roses, Symbolizing Hope and Healing

1–2 minutes

In a unique act of transformation, Israeli artist Yaron Bob recycles remnants of rockets fired from Gaza, turning them into intricate artworks. Among his most poignant creations are roses, which stand as potent symbols of hope and healing amidst conflict.

Bob’s artistic journey is deeply personal. Residing in Yated, a small Israeli community near the border with Gaza, his motivation stems directly from his experiences with rocket attacks. He has recounted two close encounters with missiles striking his home, profoundly shaping his perspective and purpose. The project, aptly named ‘Rockets into Roses,’ has been ongoing for nearly two decades as of April 2026.

His creative process involves collecting metal from Kassam rockets, gathered from police stations across southern Israel. Using a hammer, anvil, and oven, Bob meticulously melts, shapes, and sculpts the destructive material into art. The resulting sculptural roses are imbued with profound symbolism, representing peace, hope, and a defiant response to death. Often, these pieces feature a base shaped like a map of Israel, with the rose’s stem emerging from the frequently targeted city of Sderot. Each finished rose includes a small plaque indicating the precise launch date of the specific rocket it originated from.

Bob’s work has garnered global attention. Menorahs crafted by him have been lit in the White House by former U.S. Presidents, including Barack Obama and Donald Trump, underscoring the universal resonance of his message. Beyond recognition, his art contributes tangibly to the safety of his community; a portion of the sales proceeds from his artworks helps fund the construction and ongoing maintenance of bomb shelters in southern Israel.

The events of October 7th brought a renewed, harrowing significance to Yaron Bob’s work. Having personally experienced the day, with many of his friends tragically killed or kidnapped, the act of transforming instruments of destruction into symbols of enduring beauty has taken on an even deeper meaning for the artist.
