Jon Hassell’s Posthumous ‘Music Is Invisible’ Completes ‘Pentimento’ Trilogy

A new album from the late Jon Hassell, titled ‘Music Is Invisible (Pentimento Volume Three)’, is set to be released on October 2, 2026. This album, Hassell’s first posthumous release of new music, will arrive via the Ndeya label.

‘Music Is Invisible (Pentimento Volume Three)’ marks the third and final installment in Hassell’s ‘Pentimento’ trilogy. This series previously included ‘Listening To Pictures’, released in 2018, and ‘Seeing Through Sound’, which followed in 2020.

The forthcoming album captures Jon Hassell’s final live performance. This memorable event took place on May 23, 2015, at St John at Hackney church in London. For the performance, Hassell was joined by collaborators Rick Cox and John von Seggern. The audio from this live recording was subsequently edited and mixed by Jeff Rona.

Jon Hassell, an American trumpet player and composer, was widely recognized for his pioneering work in developing the ‘Fourth World’ music concept. He passed away on June 26, 2021, at the age of 84.
