Detroit rock band Protomartyr has announced their seventh studio album, ‘Hotel Usona,’ set for release on September 25, 2026, via Domino. The announcement was made with an official statement penned by fellow Detroit musician Iggy Pop, who shared his insights into the forthcoming record.
Iggy Pop’s contribution to the press release for ‘Hotel Usona’ was described as a “bio” or a “loving, slightly cryptic letter.” In his statement, Pop offered a preview of the album’s sound and scope, setting expectations for Protomartyr’s latest work.
Pop characterized ‘Hotel Usona’ as being “highly themed and symphonic in its reach.” He further drew a comparison to Wagner’s opera ‘Tristan and Isolde’ and noted its musical qualities as “modal, and kind of chromatic.” This description highlights a potentially intricate and expansive sonic direction for the band.
Beyond the album’s sound, Iggy Pop also praised the band members themselves, calling them “very, very skilled musicians and creators.” In a humorous aside within his statement, he jokingly referred to Protomartyr as “kind of like Jesus.” ‘Hotel Usona’ was recorded with producer Dave Fridmann, known for his work with bands such as The Flaming Lips and MGMT, at his Tarbox Road Studios. This album follows Protomartyr’s 2023 release, ‘Formal Growth in the Desert.’
