The individual careers of Pink Floyd members continue to unfold, marked by solo artistic ventures and occasional, specific collaborations. While a full band reunion remains a distant prospect due to persistent disagreements, they have engaged in their own creative pursuits, sometimes converging for humanitarian efforts.
David Gilmour has expressed openness to participate in one-off Pink Floyd projects, particularly when aligned with charitable causes. This was exemplified by the 2022 release ‘Hey, Hey, Rise Up!’, which supported Ukraine and featured Gilmour alongside Nick Mason. However, despite this willingness for specific humanitarian endeavors, Gilmour has stated he has no intention of fully reuniting Pink Floyd with Roger Waters, citing their continued disagreements. This sentiment is reinforced by Nick Mason, who believes there is no future for a full Pink Floyd reunion that includes both Gilmour and Waters.
Roger Waters, on his part, released a re-recorded version of ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ in 2023. This project emphasized his lyrical vision for the album while acknowledging the contributions of his former bandmates to the original work. Waters has also publicly expressed disillusionment with contemporary music. He has stated that he does not anticipate a ‘new revolution’ and that no current artists can match the impact of his generation, naming Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, and Leonard Cohen as influential figures. Waters has further indicated a lack of engagement with modern bands, such as Radiohead, stating their music does not ‘move’ him in the same way as artists from previous eras.
Beyond their collective history, individual members have also garnered recognition for their solo artistic expressions, notably in album art. Roger Waters’ 1984 solo album, ‘The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking,’ is recognized for its controversial cover art created by Gerald Scarfe. David Gilmour’s 2015 solo album, ‘Rattle That Lock,’ received the ‘Best Art Vinyl’ award, with artwork designed by Dave Stansbie and Rupert Truman in collaboration with Aubrey Powell. Nick Mason has also expressed his appreciation for album visuals, praising the revised artwork for Pink Floyd’s ‘Animals 2018 Remix’ as ‘truly brilliant’ and highlighting the original ‘Wish You Were Here’ cover for its impactful design. Gilmour’s artistic admiration extends to historical influences such as Lead Belly, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, and Paul McCartney.
