The theatrical adaptation of Prince’s seminal film and album, ‘Purple Rain,’ is officially slated to make its Broadway premiere as ‘Prince’s Purple Rain’ in spring 2027. The highly anticipated production is set to begin previews on March 12, 2027, with its official opening night scheduled for April 12, 2027, at the historic Majestic Theatre.
This Broadway iteration will introduce a largely new creative team at the helm. Tony-nominated Saheem Ali will direct the production, and Peter Duchan will serve as the book writer. This marks a change from the earlier Minneapolis run, which saw Lileana Blain-Cruz and Branden Jacobs-Jenkins in these respective roles.
Continuing their involvement from previous stages of development are Emmy Award-winning Ebony Williams as choreographer and Tony Award-winner Jason Michael Webb, who remains as music supervisor, arranger, and orchestrator. Adding a direct connection to the legendary artist, Prince’s longtime collaborators Bobby Z and Morris Hayes will contribute to the musical as music advisors for the show.
Produced by Orin Wolf, the musical draws its narrative and inspiration from the 1984 Oscar-winning film and Grammy-winning album. Audiences can expect to hear over 20 of Prince’s most beloved hit songs woven into the story, including ‘When Doves Cry,’ ‘I Would Die 4 U,’ ‘Take Me with U,’ and ‘The Beautiful Ones.’
The story centers on ‘The Kid,’ an aspiring musician navigating the vibrant 1984 Minneapolis music scene. The narrative explores his struggles with family dynamics, professional rivalries, and a burgeoning romance. A prior version of the musical held its world premiere in Prince’s hometown of Minneapolis at the State Theatre, running from October 16 to November 23, 2025, where it received mixed reviews.
The Broadway announcement coincided with the 42nd anniversary of the original ‘Purple Rain’ film’s release. Tickets for ‘Prince’s Purple Rain’ are scheduled to go on sale in September, with casting details for the production yet to be announced.
